Robert Bear came to the Bay Area in 2008, discovered “bears”, and immediately stopped shaving. He found his chosen family in SF with the bears, otters, pups, and other animals in the leather community.
A dedicated volunteer, Robert had supported numerous organizations and events long before winning his title, including the Leatherman’s Discussion Group (LDG), the Bearrison Street Fair, Folsom Street Events, San Francisco Pride, and Dore Alley.
In the summer of 2025, Robert took the leap when he ran for - and won - the Mr. San Francisco Bear 2026 title. Since then, he’s poured his energy into giving back by volunteering at beer busts, hosting fundraisers, and raising money for the LGBT Asylum Project and La Raza Centro Legal, two organizations close to his heart.
"Winning the Mr. San Francisco Bear title is more than just wearing a patch on a leather vest," Robert recently said. "It's engaging in the community as a titleholder and a leader, making new friends and connections, and having memories based in community service that will last well beyond your title year. I would encourage anyone even remotely interested in running for a title to do so; it forces one to become part of a much larger community based on respect, service, fun times and connection."
When he’s not volunteering or working, you’ll probably find Robert in the Castro, Mission, or SoMa searching for great food, strong drinks, and all the other bare bear necessities.
